Grade 1: Accidentals : Introduction

* If you are a complete novice it is advisable to read the following modules before attempting questions on accidentals:

1. Notes & note values

2. The stave

There are three accidentals you will be required to know in grade 1, see below.

The sharp The flat The natural

The sharp sign raises a note by a semitone.  The flat sign lowers a note by a semitone and the natural sign replaces previous notes that may have been sharp or flat and puts it back to a natural note.

Accidentals must always be placed before a note not after it.  Notice the position of the accidentals above.  If a note is placed in a space then the accidental must also be placed in that same space.  See below for notes placed on a line.

Please note: The grade 1 to 5 theory exams are now online. Some of the questions in the online exam have been rephrased to accommodate the new style. In this video tutorial some of the descriptions refer to the written paper of old. With regard to the online exams you will no longer be required to write your answers but you will need to analyse the questions and tick or highlight an answer.
